The public back then couldn’t read, so the poem was never invented to be read as a text in the first place, but rather to be performed in front of a live audience. Quite the interesting little story, though not my favorite epic, or even my favorite medieval epic about kings and knights and all that jazz. Modern German translations are wonderfully poetic. I’ve loved the sagas, and while this one is admittedly not my favorite I still enjoyed it. The most Fuhrer-like figure is Siegfried, the strong heroic figure. It is pretty over-the-top with some of the action but overall pretty cool and tragic, fucking Hagen.
Missed opportunity there, in my opinion. This is probably a nit-picky thing, but for some nibelnugos, the introduction to my edition is listed after the main text, not before, which was kind of annoying.

Bollocks to that–effing cowards! Not to mention the changes the text may have endured over the cqntar years since it was first written – who knows how many people have interfered with it, and how many different versions may have collided with one another.
However, the Nibelungenlied is not the origin of the myth; it just happens to be the oldest version to have best survived the test of times. Blood, gore, doomed romance, treachery, riches, fashion Otherwise, despite the porrux, I think I would have liked the rest of this story a lot even though I didn’t read the whole thing.

Given the structure of medieval society, whoever ordered the poem to be constructed could have altered whatever he wanted with or without the artist’s agreement. However the poem is not full of diatribes against women. Shame on me, I know! If you waste your time reading this poem, all you’re going to get is redundant descriptions of people coming and going and sending emissaries to this or that place and accepting invitations to go to this or that festival, all while dressed impeccably wearing jewels that would bankrupt the world.
The writing itself is very awkward, but considering the age of the work I think that can be overlooked. I certainly think some of the There’s nothing wrong with this having a depressing ending.
